The Lowcountry Chorale was formed in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Dwight A. Dunbar. The first concert was held at the USCB Performing Arts Center, Beaufort, South Carolina on Mother's Day, May 11, 1997. In late 2007, Dr. Dunbar retired and the Chorale was placed under the Directorship of Mr. Cliff Kosier. At the same time, Mrs. Gloria Bockelman was installed as the Chorale's accompanist. In mid 2012, Mr. Kosier departed the Beaufort area and the Chorale Directorship was placed in the capable hands of Mr. Alan Lathan.
The Chorale is supported through seasonal dues (currently $35.00), Friends of the Lowcountry Chorale, advertising by local businesses in the concert program and performance ticket sales.
The Chorale meets at St. John's Lutheran Church, 157 Lady's Island Drive, Tuesday evenings from 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm. St John's also serves as the site for Chorale performances. Rehearsals for the Chorale's fall performances are conducted from September through November with two performances in late November/early December. Rehearsals for the Chorale's spring performances are conducted from February through May with two performances in late May.
